CHOCOLATE/CANDY

Cocoa Pete's
BERRY BERRY DANGEROUS (Discontinued)
Dried California Strawberry Morsels in Dark Chocolate

If you're going to indulge in chocolate, it might as well be dark (more antioxidants than milk chocolate) and wrapped around some nutrient-carrying fruit. These chewy, chocolate and berry morsels have the winning combination for an occasional treat or gift.

COOKIES

World of Grains
OATMEAL RAISIN COOKIE (Discontinued)
F, LS

Mainstream food manufacturers (Mars, in this case) are finally getting the message about how to create a cookie that is tasty, a good source of fiber (3 g) and not too sweet. These bite-sized crispy treats are made with a mix of whole grains and seeds plus added fiber from inulin. Just 3.5 g total fat (1 g saturated). The box holds 4 packs, each with 130 calories. Five flavors (were) available.

Almondina
ORIGINAL AND CINNAROMA BISCUITS

LS

These biscotti-like cookies are not too hard and get just enough sweetness and chewyness from raisins. Almonds provide the only fat (mostly "good," monounsaturated fat) and a fair amount of protein (4 g per 4 biscuits), for a well-balanced treat. Other flavors available, including a chocolate-dipped version with only 5 g fat per 2 biscuits (and a good source of fiber)!

Country Choice
OLD FASHIONED OATMEAL COOKIES
LF, LS, Org

A soft-style oatmeal cookie reminiscent of addictive cookie dough, but with a lot less fat (3 g total) and no saturated or trans fat. Made with whole grains/flours and no wheat. Serving size is small (1 cookie -- 23 g), so at a more typical serving size of 30 g, fiber and protein will be a little more impressive. Note: packaging (design) has changed. We also liked the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip (4 g fat; 8 g sugars vs. 9 g in the Oatmeal).

Duchy Originals
ORGANIC OATEN BISCUITS
Org

A slightly more mature, cosmopolitan "biscuit," brought to you by the Prince of Wales. Made with butter (5 g fat, 3 g saturated), but still lower in fat than most cookies and higher in fiber (2 g) and protein (3 g) per 1 oz serving. We liked them topped with marmalade or dipped in yogurt for a speedy breakfast.

Barbara's Bakery
OATMEAL-WHEATFREE SNACKIMALS
LS, Now with Organic grains

Fun animal shapes in a great-tasting whole grain cookie with no saturated or hydrogenated fats. Comes in a handy two serving package. What more could a parent or kid ask for? Fat is fairly low for a cookie -- 5 g total per 1/2 pack serving.

FROZEN DESSERTS

Haagen Dazs
VANILLA FROZEN YOGURT

LS

The great creamy texture and taste of vanilla ice cream, but with 1/4 the fat (or less) and about the same amount of sugar, but more calcium (25% DV per 1/2 cup serving) and protein than most ice creams and frozen yogurts. Other flavors available.

Starbucks
MOCHA FRAPPUCCINO BAR (Discontinued)
LF, LS, H

Rich, cool and satisfying frozen bar that melts in your mouth to the tune of chocolate and coffee. Low fat (2 g), plus a good source of fiber (3 g) and calcium (10% DV) qualifies this Winner as a "healthy" treat. (Too bad Starbucks decided to discontinue this and focus on their "premium" ice cream line instead.)

CAKES/PIES/TARTS

Trader Joe's
WILD BLUEBERRY TARTE

LS

Found in the freezer section, this French-made tarte has a light, cakey crust covered with lightly sweetened blueberries. It's a simple but satisfying and refreshing dessert with only 250 calories (per 1/4 tarte) and 6 g fat (3.5 g saturated); balanced with 2 g fiber and 2 g protein. Great topped with a spoonful of vanilla or plain yogurt or frozen yogurt.

PUDDING/CUSTARDS

Kozy Shack
FLAN CREME CARAMEL

LS

Simple, homey-tasting custard with no scary-sounding ingredients. Fat is fairly low at 3.5 g (2 g saturated), and while it's sweet (from sugar), there are 4 g protein to balance it out. Bonus: 10% DV for Calcium.
